Creating a comprehensive understanding

On Tuesday, 12.03.2024, a joint ENFIN PathFinder was held in Brussels. Among the participants were representatives of Member States, the Commission and European Parliament, as well as PathFinder partners and representatives of stakeholder groups. The aim was to provide an overview of how a good European Forest Monitoring system should look like and how to get there.

From National Forest Inventories to European Level Forest Monitoring

The New EU Forest Strategy 2030 recognises the need to develop a European forest monitoring system in all the Member States for information based decision making. The purpose of the webinar organised by Luke and ENFIN is to continue the discussion how National Forest Inventories (NFIs) can contribute to a European level forest monitoring system. The Webinar topics cover the potential of NFIs in monitoring biodiversity and climate change impacts at European level, as well as how to use NFIs in strategic forest planning and decision support.

 Article with serious deficiencies published in Nature

On July 1st 2020, an article was published in the scientific journal Nature.
A group of researchers from the EU Joint Research Center (JRC) declared to have found an excessive increase of harvested forest area in Europe during the years 2016–2018.
The article has sparked considerable controversy and received substantial negative responses from forest experts across Europe who identified serious deficiencies in the applied methodology and the drawn conclusions. Representing the major forest monitoring programs, we, the European National Forest Inventories Network, feel the urgent need to counter some of its claims.
